Welcome

Welcome

My name is Lisa, and I am a registered psychologist based in Durban North, KwaZulu-Natal. Since hearing about psychology as a potential career when I was 14 years old, I intuitively knew that it was something I was meant to do. I am blessed to call my passion for helping people, my chosen profession.

In the hurly-burly world of today, it is often so difficult to find someone who really listens. And that is where I come in. I am a talker too – but from the perspective of unpacking the real issues at heart - the issues that many of us battle to put words to, and ultimately understand.

Counselling or psychotherapy is an interpersonal relationship with the aim to improve an individual’s well being. Essentially, I deploy a variety of talk therapy techniques to improve my clients’ mental wellbeing. Using both short term counselling and longer term psychotherapy, I aim to provide a safe and supportive space in which my patients can explore and process difficult issues. Short term counselling assists individuals who are having difficulties adjusting to stressful life circumstances, whilst longer term therapy aims to facilitate personal development and growth.

Whatever your reason for seeking the advice and services of a psychologist, you can be rest assured that I will work together with you to gain insight and understanding of your behavioural patterns and relationships, as well as providing perspective and clarity on your interactions with the world around you.

Together, I look forward to making you the very best that I know you can be.

Treatment Approach

Treatment Approach

I am always guided by my clients’ personal individual needs – what is right for one person may not be right for the next. Ultimately however, my goal is to create a therapeutic partnership with each of my patients, and to enable a process of awareness, growth and greater mental wellbeing to take place.

I am a firm believer in giving my clients easy-to-implement 'take-aways' to practice at home. Quite simply, this is because the success and satisfaction with the therapy process is largely dependent on my clients’ motivation and willingness to implement 'in the real world' what is explored together in therapy.

I work with several therapeutic approaches, including:

  • Client Centred Therapy: In this technique, a comfortable, non-judgmental environment is created to aid individuals in finding their own solutions to their problems.
  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy: This approach focuses on one’s patterns of communication with others, and aims to improve interpersonal relationships.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Psychodynamic therapies focus on revealing and resolving unconscious conflicts that are driving patient symptoms.
  • Cognitive: This approach aims to solve problems concerning dysfunctional emotions, behaviours and cognitions through a present-focused, goal-oriented, systematic procedure.
  • Behavioural Therapy: This form of therapy functions on the idea that all behaviours are learned and that unhealthy behaviors can be changed.
  • Play Therapy: Children do not have the same capacity to verbalise their conflicts and feelings. Play therapy provides a safe haven for children to project their processes onto their activities, allowing me to identify and work with their psychological issues.

I also conduct individual assessments with both children and adolescents. These are often required to assess emotional and behavioural difficulties. Added to this I also offer a full psycho-educational assessment, which is necessary to conduct when primary learning problems are evident.
